We previously heard Apple was in discussions with Google and OpenAI about integrating AI functionality into iOS 18. Now, it appears Apple has finalised an agreement with the maker of ChatGPT.

Mark Gurman, a Bloomberg correspondent, reported in his Power On newsletter that Apple and OpenAI have secured a deal for OpenAI to provide chatbot functionality in iOS 18. He noted that this agreement will be a "component" of Apple's WWDC developer event in June.

It seems Apple isn’t relying solely on one partner for its cloud AI needs. Gurman mentioned that Apple is still negotiating with Google to offer Gemini as an "option," but this might not be announced next month.

Earlier leaks indicated that Apple is developing its own Ajax AI model for on-device text analysis, smart replies, and summaries. Therefore, it makes sense that ChatGPT and other OpenAI technologies will be used for more intensive tasks like analysing longer texts and generating images.

Regardless, the deal with OpenAI should provide Apple with some flexibility as it continues to develop its own chatbot, similar to how it initially used Google Maps before introducing Apple Maps.

Custom emoji on iOS 18

This isn't the only AI-related news for Apple today. Gurman also reported that iOS 18 might introduce custom emoji functionality and other AI features.
