Anthropic, an artificial intelligence (AI) startup backed by Amazon, is launching its generative AI assistant Cloud in Europe with a focus on security and privacy, amid increased regulatory scrutiny.

The startup has prioritised security and privacy, which is important in the European market, where the EU has established the world's first comprehensive AI regulatory framework, the AI Act. The legislation aims to classify AI risks and apply rules accordingly, addressing concerns about employment impacts and privacy.

Claude offers a paid subscription-based version, Claude Pro, and the business-focused Claude Team plans, priced at 28 euros ($30) per month, highly fluent in several European languages. Anthropic's commitment to accuracy, security and privacy is evident in its design and development of Claude.

Cloud's capabilities include generating text, images, and other content, making it a versatile tool for individuals and businesses.

The launch comes amid regulatory scrutiny, with Amazon's $2.75 billion investment in Anthropic raising concerns about independence and competition. UK regulators are reviewing whether Amazon's partnership with Anthropic constitutes a merger, which could affect the market.

However, valued at $18.4 billion Anthropic is expanding its reach in Europe with the launch of its Claude AI chatbot available via the web and iOS mobile app.

Anthropic's focus on security and privacy is critical, as AI technology advances rapidly and officials worry about its impact on jobs and privacy. The EU's AI Act sets a precedent for governing AI, and companies like Anthropic must navigate this new landscape.
