Pakistan launches its first indigenous Electric Vehicle (EV) conversion kits on Friday through the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS).
Developed in collaboration with technology partner AGECO (Pvt.) Ltd, the kits, branded ECONOMIA, enable existing petrol vehicles, including motorcycles, rickshaws, and other two-wheelers, to be converted into fully electric, zero-emission vehicles.
COMSATS Secretariat organised the launch ceremony that was attended by ambassadors of countries like Ghana, Iran, Malaysia, Palestine, Syria, Somalia, Yemen, and Zimbabwe, besides the Coordinator to Prime Minister for Climate Change Romina Khurshid.
It was also attended by senior government officials, private sector representatives, and delegates from international organisations. COMSATS and AGECO had been able to deliver EV-converted rickshaws to M/S Imperial Engineering Company during the event as the first commercial deployment under the newly signed MoU.
Romina Khurshid, while appreciating the fast-growing public health risks and climate change challenges in Pakistan, recognised that the indigenous EV technology provides a locally developed, affordable solution that can help both the environment and the economy.
The COMSATS Executive Director, Dr Muhammad Nafees Zakaria, said that such a programme would drastically cut CO2 emissions from more than 32 million motorcycles and rickshaws, which will save at least $3.78 billion on fuel imports every year and create an incentive in the shape of carbon credits amounting to $2-15 million.
The project is likely to bring in employment opportunities and innovation and also further a number of relevant UN SDGs.
AGECO CEO Engr. Aslam Azad called it an example of Pakistan's potential for homegrown green technology and sustainable development.
COMSATS now intends to expand the reach of such initiatives for other member states of the Global South, with the aim of making EVs more affordable regionally and further supporting greener and cleaner transport solutions.
