In a groundbreaking move serving the differently-abled segment of society by utilising artificial intelligence (AI), ConnectHear, Pakistan’s leading social enterprise for disability inclusion, has partnered with Ufone 4G to launch "SUNO," an innovative AI-powered Early Warning System.
This commendable initiative is a thoughtful one, aiming to deliver life-saving alerts in sign language for the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
The alert system is supported by the GSMA Mobile for Humanitarian Innovation Fund, addressing a crucial gap in emergency communication to ensure that Deaf individuals receive timely alerts during natural disasters like floods and earthquakes.
The system broadcasts sign language video alerts instantly via Ufone’s WhatsApp bot, reaching at-risk individuals across Pakistan at no cost.
ConnectHear creates content in sign language using advanced AI, while Ufone provides the nationwide distribution infrastructure.
Hatem Bamatraf, the president and group CEO of PTCL & Ufone 4G, expressed commitment to leveraging technology for social welfare, stating, “Our collaboration with ConnectHear reflects our belief that true digital inclusion leaves no one behind.”
ConnectHear Co-Founder Azima Dhanjee underscored the importance of emergency communication: “In an emergency, communication isn’t just important, it’s a matter of life and death.”
She stressed that this project is to change the reliance on others during crises, giving accessibility that is free from dependence on others.
This AI Early Warning System appears to have set a precedent for inclusive technology in Pakistan, in a bid to protect citizens equally.
