The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) approved on Tuesday a hike of Rs0.08 per unit in electricity prices for consumers across Pakistan, including Karachi, under the monthly fuel cost adjustment.

NEPRA issued an official notification that electricity prices will go up by 8 paisas per unit, and the adjustment will be applied to electricity bills for the month of October.

The national electricity regulator said the increase in electricity prices will also apply to K-Electric consumers in line with the government's directives.

According to NEPRA, this adjustment is part of the routine monthly fuel price mechanism and will reflect in upcoming electricity prices billed to all categories of consumers.

Last month, NEPRA approved an increase of Rs 0.19 per unit in the electricity tariff under the monthly fuel cost adjustment. The hike applied to all electricity distribution companies, including K-Electric, but excluded lifeline consumers, prepaid users, and electric vehicle charging stations.

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA-G) had requested a raise of 19 paisas per unit. NEPRA stated that it carefully heard the views of all stakeholders during the hearing. The authority will release a detailed decision after further scrutiny of the submitted data.

The regulatory body granted K-Electric permission to recover Rs74 billion worth of losses from electricity theft and unpaid bills, which is expected to increase costs for honest consumers.
