Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb has called for the adoption of advanced data analytics and artificial intelligence to strengthen audit processes and prevent the misuse of public funds.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Center for Government Data Analytics at the Auditor-General of Pakistan (AGP) Headquarters on Wednesday, the finance minister stressed the importance of modern tools such as machine learning, AI-based auditing, and automated bots for analytical functions.
He welcomed the establishment of the new centre, describing it as a key step toward improving transparency and accountability in public finances.
Senator Aurangzeb highlighted the importance of digital access to the data present in the various databases in the public sector. The improvement in data interlinking will make the way audits are carried out even more effective.
In the context of the event, the Auditor General of Pakistan (AGP) Maqbool Ahmad Gondal emphasised the shift towards entity- or project-based auditing with a focus on quality over the importance of the number of audited entities.
He further explained the significance of auditing as a means of effective governance and the measures being taken towards the modernisation of the AGP’s functions with the use of the Audit Management Information System and sophisticated data analytics tools.
The data analytics centre has been set up as per the vision of the prime minister of Pakistan for economic digitalisation.
Controller General of Accounts Umar Ali Khan apprised the minister about the significance of the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), as they are the key financial management institutions of the country.
He gave a briefing about the various initiatives like RAAST, the micro-payment gateway solution, online billing solutions, and SAP HANA migration initiatives.
