The free service of the Emission Testing System (ETS) for vehicles in Lahore will be concluded on June 30, 2025, after which the Punjab government has indicated it will transfer the process to vehicle dealerships in the city.
This initiative is in accordance with a plan to improve air quality and regulate vehicle emissions in Lahore.
The ETS Program was launched with the goal to measure the pollution level in cars, bikes, and other vehicles by verifying how much harmful smoke is being released into the air.
Notably, their mission was to make sure that vehicles are not harming the environment by releasing harmful smoke or toxic gases.
"The Secretary of the Environment Protection and Climate Change Department, Raja Jahangir Anwar, indicated that once the free service ends, every car dealership, whether they are selling Suzuki, Toyota, Honda, or other brands, will have ETS machines."
"They will have trained personnel on site, but vehicle owners will have to pay to get their vehicles tested; the cost will be Rs 400 for each emission test conducted."
He said the service will service many more tested vehicles and help to curb the air pollution being produced in Lahore. "Dealerships will be quicker and more convenient for the public."
Earlier, the free ETS service was available at 20 testing centers across Lahore, with each center having three mobile squads. But long lines, delays, and limited capacity made it hard for many vehicle owners to get their tests done on time.
