Global RAM prices are rising at an unprecedented rate, with high-end 64GB Double Data Rate 5 (DDR5) kits now costing as much as a PlayStation 5 Pro.

The sharp increase comes as worldwide demand for AI infrastructure grows, creating shortages that also push solid-state drive (SSD) prices up by nearly 100%.

Retailers and manufacturers across major markets say the memory supply has not kept up with the surge in server and data centre requirements.

PC builder CyberPowerPC said that, in the United States and the United Kingdom, its Product Team Lead confirmed the price of memory will go up starting from December 2025. Tech retailer Micro Center has switched to spot pricing, which means the cost of RAM changes every day based on worldwide supply.

Hardware Operations Lead, Framework, announced the temporary halt on the sale of stand-alone RAM to avoid bulk buying and hoarding. These changes in policy show how grave this DRAM shortage has become.

Similar trends unfold across Asia. Taiwanese distributors have begun demanding that retailers purchase supplies of Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) alongside motherboards, while several stores in Japan are putting limits on the numbers of memory kits that each customer can buy.

These restrictions show how strained the supply chain has become in trying to meet the demand generated by AI data centres, large-scale training clusters, and next-generation computing hardware.

Experts predict that DDR5 RAM prices could stay well above average until deep into 2026, as the continued surge in demand for AI-related hardware is forcing brands to source memory from the volatile spot market just to keep production going.
