Google is taking a significant step forward with its AI Mode in Search that is being rolled out to users across the US.

This new mode transforms the traditional way to Google Search, fundamentally shifting the search experience away from links, no matter how useful they are, to having a conversation with a chatbot.

The conversational experience is similar to ChatGPT or Gemini, giving the user a summary, breakdown, and even personalized help with the content based on information that has been collected via Deep Search, Project Mariner, etc.

Google announced AI Mode at the Google I/O 2025 developer conference to demonstrate the new, emerging way to use Search.

AI Mode improves the way Search understands questions, finds answers, proposes and completes related tasks, from planning a trip to comparing prices on experience goods online.

Moreover, Google voiced AI Mode as shifting the user experience away from links and towards collecting, managing, and acting on information more usefully at scale.

The AI Mode release included AI Overviews, which are summaries of information using Gemini that appear at the top of certain search results.

Every month, there are already more than one and a half billion users seeing these AI Overviews alone.
