In view of the internet-related issues Pakistan has been facing since the ongoing year began, the government has set eyes on an ambitious feat to attain in 2025, the year around the corner.
Terming 2025 the year of 5G, the government aims to achieve an average broadband speed of 50/100 Mbps and expand Fibre-To-The-Site (FTTS) coverage to 60%.
This remarkable target was shared by Amer Shahzad, Director General (DG) Licencing at the National Broadband Network Forum 2024, organised by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) in collaboration with Huawei.
Shahzad noted that the 5G spectrum auction is scheduled for April 2025 for the release of next-tier broadband technology in the country, as reported by Business Recorder.
Reiterating the government's ambition associated with the launch of 5G in Pakistan, he said Fixed Broadband (FBB) penetration is currently below 2% in Pakistan, expressing hope for it to jump to 20% in the next five years.
Likewise, he anticipated the broadband speed, currently 15 Mbps, to be raised to 50/100 Mbps, while claiming that the presently low FTTS coverage of 20% may also be surged to 60%.
