Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja on Sunday highlighted the government’s commitment to bridging the gender divide in the digital space.
Speaking at a virtual conference titled "Digitalisation and Women in Politics" held in Doha, Qatar, she underlined the critical need for women’s access to technology and the internet.
She explained that providing digital devices and internet access can empower women in various ways. However, socio-economic challenges often prevent them from fully benefiting from digital tools and entering mainstream politics.
Shaza Fatima shared that the government is actively working on a Gender Digital Divide Policy to make it easier for women to access the digital economy. Efforts are underway to remove barriers to women using mobile phones and Information and Communications Technology (ICT).
She highlighted the Prime Minister’s Free Laptop Scheme and noted its significant role in giving young women access to digital tools. Furthermore, she reflected on the progress of the Smartphones for All Policy, a government-backed initiative aimed at expanding smartphone accessibility.
The minister stressed that digitalisation could help women overcome hurdles and actively participate in politics. This initiative aligns with the government's vision to promote inclusion and empower women through technology.
