In line with Pakistan making notable strides in the automotive sector, Honda Atlas Cars Limited (HCAR), a subsidiary of Honda Motor Co. Ltd, is set to introduce a hybrid model in Pakistan soon, featuring Honda Sensing, an advanced driver-assistance technology.
The announcement was made by Masaya Wakuda, HCAR’s president and CEO, during the company’s annual general meeting (AGM).
In response to shareholder inquiries regarding the lack of hybrid options in Honda's current lineup, Wakuda highlighted the company's global leadership in hybrid technology, particularly in the US, and expressed the intention to leverage this expertise in Pakistan.
“Apart from hybrid technology, the company plans to introduce advanced Honda Sensing in the new hybrid model,” he stated.
This development comes as competitors like Toyota Pakistan have announced significant investments in hybrid technology, with Toyota committing $100 million over the next few years.
During the AGM, shareholders raised concerns about the impact of the government’s recent decision allowing the import of second-hand cars up to five years old.
The chairman noted that this policy is expected to generate additional revenue and increase prices for reconditioned vehicles.
Honda management also confirmed that the current Automobile Policy will remain effective until June 2026, while the government has imposed a 1% to 2% carbon tax on existing Internal Combustion Engines to promote electric and hybrid vehicles, not to mention a hike in sales tax on small cars from 8.5% to 18%.
