Ajman Police have declared a total prohibition on the use of electric scooters on all public roads and streets in the emirate, in a clear attempt to improve road safety and reduce traffic infractions.

Both privately owned and rented electric scooters are covered by the ruling, which takes effect right away.

The prohibition comes after an increase in collisions and near misses that were linked to careless e-scooter riding.

Many cases of riders breaking traffic laws have been reported by authorities, including riding without safety equipment or helmets, going against the flow of traffic on one-way streets, abusing pedestrian crossings, and weaving through traffic in an unsafe way.

With the authority to stop, fine, and seize electric scooters used in violation of the ban, Ajman Police will vigorously enforce the rule.

Authorities have cautioned that fines will be high enough to discourage infractions, even though precise penalties have not been made public.

This action is a component of a larger campaign to encourage safe riding habits and lower accident rates throughout the United Arab Emirates.

Similar initiatives have been made in Abu Dhabi, where police have made videos showing careless e-scooter use and demanding more stringent laws.

A dedicated unit has been set up in Dubai to keep an eye out for bicycle and e-scooter infractions.

Residents' opinions on the ban have been divided; some believe it is a necessary safety precaution.

The prospect of permitting e-scooters in specific locations or within a controlled framework in the future has not been ruled out by authorities.
