The federal government has announced a Re1 per litre reduction in petrol prices for the next fortnight, effective March 29, 2025. The decision provides slight relief to consumers amid fluctuating global oil prices.

Under a notification from the Finance Division, the petrol price was reduced from Rs255.63 to Rs254.63 per litre, but the price of High-Speed Diesel (HSD) remained at Rs258.64 per litre.

The revision came after an analysis by the Oil & Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), which calculates consumer prices based on market trends abroad.

Fuel price adjustment in Pakistan

The latest adjustment came after the government's previous decision on March 15 not to revise petroleum prices. Whereas petrol prices decreased marginally, high-speed diesel has remained stable, mirroring market trends.

It's worth mentioning that the fuel prices in Pakistan are adjusted at regular, fortnight-long intervals to bring them in line with oil prices in the international market and the country's economic stability. Changes in exchange rates and global crude oil price also prompt fuel price changes in Pakistan.

Petrol and diesel prices have a direct impact on transportation costs, which in turn affect inflation and the cost of basic commodities. A small drop in petrol prices can bring some relief, but steady diesel prices ensure transportation and industrial costs will remain the same.
