K-Electric is likely to drop the electricity tariff by Rs4.69 per unit with the approval of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), providing ease to its consumers under fuel cost adjustment.

The proposed cut depends on lower fuel prices during April and forms part of the routine monthly fuel charge adjustment mechanism.

If approved, the reduction would translate into a relief of Rs7.17 billion for K-Electric customers.

This comes after NEPRA earlier issued its decision on K-Electric’s (KE) write-off petition, letting partial claims of Rs50 billion against the company’s claims worth Rs76 billion about the Multi-Year Tariff (MYT) control period spanning FY17 – FY23.

To note, the city had been facing intensified load-shedding as summer heat peaks, drawing protests not only from residents but also from elected representatives.

In response to concerns about high electricity costs, K-Electric CEO Syed Moonis Abdullah Alvi acknowledged the issue, while placing the responsibility on government policies, indicating that the company’s pricing is influenced by regulatory and policy frameworks beyond its control.

It is worth noting that the proposed reduction applies only to K-Electric users, not to consumers in other distribution regions like LESCO or MEPCO.
