The National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) on Thursday ended the fee for the cancellation of National Identity Cards for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP), facilitating families of deceased Pakistanis to cancel NICOP cards without any charges.
Nadra said that parents, siblings, spouses and children of the deceased can now apply for NICOP cancellation without paying any fee, provided the death is registered either at the local Union Council or a Pakistani embassy.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Nadra said: "On the directions of the Federal Minister for Interior & Narcotics Control, Nadra has waived off the NICOP cancellation fee for deceased Pakistani citizens. This step has been undertaken to ensure timely and accurate registration of deaths."
A member of the deceased's family can complete the process at the nearest Nadra centre or through the Pak-ID app on their smartphone. The submission of the deceased’s physical ID card is no longer required.
Last week, Nadra introduced a digital system for birth and death registration. With this digital system, data is collected directly from hospitals and health centres to make registration transparent and more efficient.
The system — approved by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif — is in a pilot phase and will be applied across Pakistan once provincial arrangements are made.
Officials said initial installations cover over 50 hospitals and health centres, including Islamabad’s Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Federal Government Hospital; Lahore’s Lady Aitchison Hospital; Quetta Bolan Medical College, District Headquarters Hospital (DHQ), Sheikh Zayed and Arya Hospital; as well as DHQs in Haripur, Batkhela and facilities in Mirpur, Gilgit, Hyderabad and Matiari.
