In a move aimed at encompassing digitalisation through issues pertaining to citizens' national identity cards, the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) announced the launch of Pakistan’s first “dematerialised digital identity card” during its Silver Jubilee ceremony on Monday.
Marking a transformative leap by incorporating technology into the public's national IDs, the auspicious event of Nadra's Silver Jubilee (twenty-fifth anniversary) was attended by Nadra Founding Chairman Major General (Retd) Zahid Ehsan as the chief guest and several other key stakeholders.
During the ceremony, the State Bank of Pakistan lifted the veil off a memorable coin, whereas Pakistan Post presented a special postage stamp and a book detailing Nadra's 25-year journey.
The announcement of the rollout of Pakistan's first digital identity card was a notable step towards the digital identity transformation, said Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi in his written message.
Once the digital identity cards are launched, individuals will be able to keep their digitised identities on their smartphones by integrating them into the Pak ID mobile app.
Regarding this, the national identity regulatory authority will also introduce a digital verification system, bringing secure and instant verification of various services as part of the World Bank-backed Digital Economy Project.
