Elon Musk-owned X (formerly Twitter) has launched its XChat app for the iOS users, allowing them to connect with their X contacts for messaging, file sharing, audio and video calls, as well as group chats.

The company, in the XChat's launch video, stated that the application offers many of the elements of modern messaging X had already introduced to its chats feature, like the ability to delete and edit messages, block screenshots and send disappearing messages. The new XChat app also supports video and audio calls, and X claims that all messages sent with XChat are end-to-end encrypted.

Is XChat app secure to use?

It is important to note that Musk-owned X claims that all messages are end-to-end encrypted and PIN protected; however, security experts have previously disputed the company’s encryption claims.

Security experts warned potential users that the XChat service appears to be less secure than other encrypted messaging apps, like Signal, when the app was first introduced. They will need to evaluate the dedicated XChat app again, now that it’s broadly available, to see if the necessary improvements have been made.

Meanwhile, XChat is stepping in to serve as the new destination for X’s Communities, which the company has decided to shut down due to lack of use and high amounts of spam. Musk is continuously working on separate applications for the users, with an aim to compete with rivals like Meta, Google, and more.
