The Nintendo Switch has set a formidable benchmark in gaming history, boasting over 130 million units sold and securing its place as Nintendo's top-selling console, surpassing even the iconic Wii and steadily approaching the DS handheld. Yet, as the Switch reigns supreme, the looming question arises: what lies on the horizon?

Following the Wii's success, Nintendo's trajectory stumbled with the ill-fated Wii U before regaining momentum with the Switch. Now, with recent blockbuster releases like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder in 2023, the Switch appears to be concluding its era on a high note.

Speculation has run rampant for years about the Switch's successor — dubbed everything from the "Switch Pro" to the "Switch 2" — rumoured to debut in 2024 featuring an eight-inch LCD screen.

Nintendo enthusiasts may need to exercise patience, as recent rumours point to a potential 2025 release date for the highly anticipated Switch 2 console. According to a report from Nikkei, Nintendo is eyeing a launch for its successor to the Switch console "as early as March," aligning with previous reports of a Q1 2025 release from VGC and Eurogamer.

Initial anticipation had circled around a 2024 release, with efforts to avoid stock shortages similar to the PS5 and Xbox Series S/X launches. However, concerns over stock availability and providing ample time for developers to craft new game titles seem to have shifted the projected release window to 2025.

Nikkei's report indicates Nintendo's focus on securing sufficient initial stock for the successor console's launch and ensuring a robust lineup of popular software at the release of the Nintendo Switch 2.
