Roblox has officially launched real-time chat rephrasing, a new AI-powered feature designed to keep gameplay fluid, while maintaining civility within chat.

The company, in a blog post, said that Roblox is enhancing its core text filters for communication on the platform to improve detections of violative messages or attempts to bypass Community Standards.

"When users encounter strings of “####” because filters have blocked inappropriate language, chats can be disrupted and hard to follow," said Roblox, adding that to keep gameplay chat flowing naturally for users, AI chat filter automatically rephrase offensive messages with polite messages. "Rather than displaying only hashmarks, filtered text will be translated into more respectful language that remains closer to the user’s original intent."

Roblox Vice President of User and Discovery Product Rajiv Bhatia said: "Chat is central to how people connect, coordinate, and play on Roblox. Real-time rephrasing helps keep gameplay and conversations on track while guiding language toward what’s appropriate. This approach reduces friction in chat while maintaining the standards that help keep our community civil."

Roblox AI chat filter availability

Roblox’s real-time chat rephrasing is currently only available for 'in-experience' chats between players who have completed age verification and are in similar age groups.

The company is also advancing its text filtering system, and upgrading its text filter to detect more variations of language that breaks its Community Standards.

Early results from Roblox’s testing show significant improvements in detecting leet-speak, or letters replaced with numbers or symbols, and more sophisticated attempts to bypass filters. This has allowed Roblox to reduce the prevalence of false negatives for sharing or soliciting personal information, like social handles or phone numbers, by 20x.
