OnePlus has temporarily disabled its AI Writer feature in the Notes app after reports emerged that it was blocking content on politically sensitive topics.
Concerns about censorship were raised when users tried to generate text regarding topics like the Dalai Lama, Taiwan, or Arunachal Pradesh, but their requests were consistently denied.
The company claims that a "technical inconsistency" is the cause of the problem and reassures customers that it is trying to fix it.
"The issue requires more time to address, so we're temporarily disabling the AI Writer in Notes to ensure a consistent user experience while we refine the underlying technical issue," the company said.
Users outside of China were impacted by the issue, which raised concerns about why content restrictions common in China showed up on other devices.
Users are uncertain about the future of AI Writer because OnePlus has not given a date for its reinstatement.
The incident emphasises the need for transparency in AI decision-making by raising questions about how international AI systems handle delicate subjects.
OnePlus is working to restore Notes AI feature and has started an internal investigation to determine root cause of problem
