In what seems to be a major step towards retentaining their longstanding alliance, OpenAI and Microsoft are reportedly discussing the terms of their multibillion-dollar partnership, while ensuring Microsoft retains access to its advanced AI technologies.
If it comes to a successful close, the development will pave the way for OpenAI’s public offering and Microsoft's access to its advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.
According to the Financial Times, the primary focus of the discussions is around how much equity Microsoft will hold in OpenAI’s for-profit transition, after investing more than $13 billion.
As part of the deal, Microsoft is also willing to give up some of its stake to get access to future AI models beyond a 2030 deadline.
The companies are also reasssessing terms of their original agreement, which was signed in 2019 when Microsoft made its first-ever investment of $1bn into the AI firm.
OpenAI is also said to have informed investors about its plans to offer a smaller share of future revenues to Microsoft as part of their partnership restructuring.
In January, Microsoft made similar changes to its OpenAI agreement after launching a joint venture with Oracle and SoftBank to build up to $500bn worth of AI-focused data centres in the US.
