Citing surging demand and rising GPU costs, OpenAI and Google reduced free access to their AI tools on Saturday.
Free users now can generate fewer videos, images, and text prompts than before, while paid users remain largely unaffected.
OpenAI limits Sora 2
The company has officially capped access to Sora 2, its flagship AI video generation tool, at six videos per day for free users.
"Our GPUs are melting," OpenAI Head of Sora Bill Peebles tweeted of the heavy demand. Paid ChatGPT Plus and Pro users retain their previous limits; additional generations can be purchased.
Free access has also been restricted by Google. Free users no longer have a guaranteed five prompts per day on Gemini 3 Pro, now described as “basic access,” with daily limits subject to change.
Its associated image generator, Nano Banana Pro, is now limited to two images per day, down from three. Paid Google AI plans remain unchanged, up to 100 prompts daily on Pro and 500 on Ultra.
Reportedly, the clampdowns reflect the high computing costs of AI video and image generation. OpenAI’s reference to “melting GPUs” highlights the strain of running modern AI tools at scale.
Analysts believe these changes indicate a gradual shift toward paid tiers, as companies balance user demand with infrastructure limitations.
