OpenAI has introduced a new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered research agent called “deep research”, designed to facilitate in-depth research using its AI chatbot ChatGPT.

In a blog post, the AI giant noted that this innovative tool is specifically for individuals who often have to conduct thorough and precise research, particularly in fields like finance, science, policy, and engineering.

According to OpenAI, deep research is ideal for instances where a simple answer or summary is insufficient and users need to consider information from multiple sources precisely.

Availability of ChatGPT agent for deep research

This feature is initially available to ChatGPT Pro users, with a limit of 100 queries per month. It will be followed by support for Plus and Team users, along with Enterprise integration.

How to use ChatGPT's deep research agent

To utilise deep research, users can select the "deep research" option in the composer, enter their query, and optionally attach files or spreadsheets.

The research process will take between 5 to 30 minutes, after which users receive a notification with the results.

Currently, the outputs are text-only; however, OpenAI plans to introduce embedded images, data visualisations, and other analytical outputs.

Additionally, the company aims to expand deep research capabilities by connecting to specialised data sources, including subscription-based and internal resources.
