OpenAI has rolled out a new App Directory for ChatGPT, allowing users to browse tools available within the platform, while also opening its software development kit (SDK) to developers to build interactive experiences that run directly inside the chatbot’s interface.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had mentioned before that the company would bring “obvious features” expected in a full-fledged platform, such as the app ecosystem, which has long been awaited by the users and developers.
Along with the update, OpenAI has renamed their current "connectors", used to enable ChatGPT to access information from third-party sites such as Google Drive and Dropbox, to "apps".
As stated in the support documentation by OpenAI, the chat connectors are now called “apps with file search”, deep research connectors are named “apps with deep research”, and the synced connectors are referred to as “apps with sync”.
These applications will also have access to the information stored within the “Memory” functionality of ChatGPT, should the functionality be enabled by the user’s preference.
For users with Free, Plus, Go, or Pro plans, OpenAI stated their data can be used to train their models if the "Improve the model for everyone" feature is enabled.
The App Directory also features more interactive versions of other third-party apps. This means that additional markets are now accessible for existing apps like Spotify and Zillow, among others. This happened when Spotify launched in the UK, Switzerland, and the European Union.
New features introduced are Apple Music, which allows users to search for music, make playlists, and deal with their music libraries from ChatGPT, and DoorDash, which can turn meal planning and recipe conception into a live shopping cart.
