OpenAI partners with AMD in multi-year deal

OpenAI has formed a multi-year strategic partnership with AMD, which is a key milestone in its efforts to increase AI computing capacity on a global scale. In the partnership, OpenAI will deploy more than 6 gigawatts of AMD GPUs, which is one of the largest hardware partnerships in the AI industry.

The announcement indicates that OpenAI will start using AMD’s Instinct MI450 series GPUs in the second half of 2026, which will allow OpenAI to enhance its computing capability for scaling ChatGPT, enterprise AI services, and new, upcoming large-scale models.

Notably, the partnership moves OpenAI further down the path of partnering with major technology companies, including several partnerships with Nvidia, SoftBank, Samsung, and now AMD.

AMD CEO Dr Lisa Su said the partnership represents a “win-win” for both companies: “We are thrilled to partner with OpenAI to deliver AI compute at a massive scale. This partnership brings the best of AMD and OpenAI together to advance the broader AI ecosystem.”

The partnership follows OpenAI’s collaboration with Nvidia, which includes a $100 billion investment and the stationing of 10 gigawatts of systems. 

Meanwhile, OpenAI describes AMD as its “core strategic compute partner” as it develops infrastructure to meet the growing global demand for AI processing and the growth in regional demand.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also highlighted AMD’s enhanced chips will help with the very fast pace of development in the area of fields of AI. Under the deal OpenAI will also receive 160 million subscription AD shares, contingent on performance metrics.
