OpenAI is planning to release a new artificial intelligence (AI) agent, code-named “Operator,” by next year. The autonomous AI tool will be able to control and perform tasks efficiently.
Since its launch, the ChatGPT maker has achieved remarkable success, attracting 200 million weekly active users worldwide, solidifying its position as a leader in AI innovation.

Citing sources, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI will likely debut “Operator” as a research preview and developer tool by January 2025.

While the Operator's official release timeline has not been disclosed, its development signifies a crucial transition towards AI solutions that can interact with computer interfaces, moving beyond text and image processing.
The report also suggested that the AI agent could tackle everything from writing complex code to booking flights.
Notably, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently stated on Reddit: “We will have better models and I think the thing that will feel like the next giant breakthrough will be agents.”
That said, this development would likely increase competition among leading AI companies that recently promised autonomous AI agents. Of these formidable contenders, Anthropic is one which stepped into the limelight by introducing “website creation and spreadsheet editing capability.”
However, Google is also investing in the next iteration of its homegrown AI tool Gemini, with plans to release its autonomous version by the end of 2024.
