In a last-minute ditch to its earlier plans which hooked the entire realm of artificial intelligence (AI) witnessing fierce competition, OpenAI has reportedly denounced plans to roll out the o3 AI model.
Citing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Gadgets360 reported that the AI pioneer has undertaken the measure in favour of a unified GPT-5 model, which will incorporate the features of the o3 AI model.
The development follows the recent launch of the scaled-down version of the o1 AI model, the o1-mini, to all ChatGPT users.
Although it was anticipated to be launched anytime this month, the more potent form of the o3-mini model’s timeline to make it live seems to be shoved under the carpet.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Altman explained the roadmap for GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, stating that by shifting its focus to the unified GPT-5 model, the company will integrate the capabilities of o3.
He also outlined that with the release of GPT-4.5 and GPT-5, OpenAI is willing to simplify for users to opt for the AI model best suited to the task at hand.
He termed this focus to be pointed at “unified intelligence,” meaning that this model will possess the capabilities of all AI models developed by the company, allowing it to assess users’ command prompts and figure out whether reasoning is needed or not.
While the scrapping of the o3 AI model’s release could be disappointing for users eyeing to get their hands on it, the development is believed to eliminate the need for users to spend hours brainstorming to decide which model would suffice for what sort of tasks.
