OpenAI is hinting at a major announcement this week, and everything points to the long-awaited GPT-5. In a post on X (the platform formerly known as Twitter), OpenAI wrote “LIVE5TREAM THURSDAY 10AM PT," substituting the “S” in livestream with a 5.
This misspelling has been widely interpreted as a cryptic hint about the anticipated GPT-5, the next major version of its AI model.
If this is true, it would be one of OpenAI’s biggest announcements since GPT-4 launched in 2023. Several clues over the past few days have come together to point to this conclusion.
On Sunday, CEO Sam Altman shared a screenshot that identified “ChatGPT 5” in the top-left corner of the screen. Just a day later, OpenAI’s Head of Applied Research said he was “excited to see how the public responds to GPT-5!”
All of these clues came shortly after Altman’s comments in July when he said GPT-5 would be released “soon".
Earlier reports also indicated that Microsoft, which is a major partner of OpenAI, has been reserving additional server space to accommodate a new and larger model, likely GPT-5.
This week was already shaping up to be important for OpenAI. On Tuesday, the company announced GPT-OSS, a free, open-weight AI model that can even run on laptops.
