In a groundbreaking announcement, OpenAI introduced its two latest artificial intelligence (AI) models, o3 and o3-mini, during Friday's final session of its “12 days of OpenAI” event.
This announcement follows Google’s recently unveiled reasoning model, Gemini 2.0, which is creating competition in the AI market.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted that the o3 and o3-mini are designed to enhance reasoning, coding proficiency and problem-solving.
OpenAI’s o3 and o3-mini model
Building on the success of the OpenAI’s o1 model launched in September, the o3 model focuses on deliberate problem-solving and thoughtful responses.
Another standout feature of the new o3 models is their coding proficiency. Altman noted that in early benchmarks the o3 model has demonstrated exceptional abilities in programming tasks, making it a valuable tool for developers.
Unlike previous iterations, the o3 models employ extended internal deliberation before generating answers, enabling it to tackle complex tasks that require advanced reasoning.
Moreover, integrated with enhanced reasoning capabilities, the o3 models also provide insightful explanations, helping users understand and refine their projects.
o3 and o3-mini model availability
Currently, the o3 and o3-mini models will be available to researchers for safety testing, ensuring reliability and ethical deployment before they are released to a wider audience.
