In what seems to be showing the ChatGPT maker's unmatched dominance in the realm of AI, OpenAI's new Sora app has surpassed formidable competitors like Google Gemini and its own ChatGPT to reach the top position on the US App Store.

Despite currently being available on an invite-only basis only in the US and Canada, the Sora app became a viral sensation right on its launch day, achieving an impressive 56,000 downloads and climbing to the No. 3 spot on Apple's flagship app marketplace.

The newly launched OpenAI offering is designed for composing AI-generated videos.

In just two days, Sora garnered a total of 164,000 installs, trolling other notable AI app launches, including Anthropic's Claude and Microsoft’s Copilot.

Although ChatGPT and Gemini had stronger initial launches, with each securing more than 80,000 downloads, Sora's quick ascent to App Store charts shows its remarkable performance, considering its limited availability.

The development also paints a picture of strong demand for AI video tools that offer a social networking-like experience.

As per TechCrunch, some OpenAI insiders expressed concerns about this focus, preferring to tackle more significant challenges for humanity pertaining to AI and its adoption.

Nevertheless, playful content on Sora, including deepfakes of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, has brought the AI-assisted social app to the spotlight.
