While gaming in Saudi Arabia has taken some widely acclaimed leaps over the past few years, the Saudi government has blocked over 300,000 inappropriate games on Roblox.
The removal of numerous Roblox games was reportedly carried out in a bid to enhance accountability in the digital sector and safeguard children.
The initiative comes on the heels of new media regulation guidelines introduced by the General Authority for Media Regulation (GAMR) in Saudi Arabia, which the Saudi media ministry said are designed to ensure content that aligns with Saudi values.
At a press conference in Riyadh, Minister of Media Salman Al Dossary announced that Roblox has agreed to disable voice and text chat features and restrict access to games that violate these guidelines until better monitoring tools are established.
He emphasised the importance of parental supervision and the use of parental controls to ensure children engage with age-appropriate content.
Al Dossary noted that GAMR has created clear standards for identifying content violations, so that creators can avoid breaches. Educational workshops have also been organised to raise awareness about these rules.
It was also highlighted that strong moral values within Saudi society serve as the primary defence against harmful content, stating that public rejection of inappropriate material is crucial.
The minister outlined that harmful content contributes less than 1% of total media output, with the majority focusing on education and promoting Saudi values.
He praised the public's positive response to the new guidelines, while describing them as part of a "historic journey" towards ambitious media goals.
The Saudi media realm is expected to further improve as the Media Fellowship Program has registered applications from over 14 companies, which will offer training in various digital fields.
