The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) on Thursday invited bids from consultants for the new airport in Sukkur to improve regional air connectivity and infrastructure.

According to the PAA’s announcement, the new Sukkur airport follows the federal government’s earlier approval of new airports in Sukkur, Mirpur (Azad Kashmir), and Dera Ismail Khan, aiming to increase domestic air travel, boost trade, and cater to increasing passenger demand in underserved regions.

Consulting firms, specialised in airport design, master planning, and feasibility studies, can apply for the bid until October 22, 2025.

The PAA noted that preference will be given to firms with prior experience in airport development.

The Planning and Development Directorate official said: “This project represents a vital step in strengthening Pakistan’s aviation infrastructure and improving access to remote areas.”

The construction of new airport in Sukkur will decrease pressure on Karachi and Multan airports with better connectivity for business, tourism, and logistics.

Yesterday, PAA Deputy Director General (Works & Development) Sumair Saeed said that the runway at Dera Ghazi Khan Airport will be extended by 3,000 meters and widened to 45 meters, with development expected to be completed by 2026.

Saeed added that feasibility studies for either “upgrading the existing Sukkur Airport or developing a new Sukkur International Airport are underway, as part of PAA’s broader plan to strengthen airport infrastructure and improve service quality nationwide.”
