In line with Pakistan striving to keep pace with global standards of crypto mining, the Power Division is reportedly developing a "Surplus Power Package" to facilitate industrial and agricultural consumers, including crypto mining operations and AI data centres.

The proposal was shared with the Senate Standing Committee on Power during a meeting chaired by last week Senator Mohsin Aziz.

However, detail discussion on the initiative was postponed because of the unavailability of Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Leghari and senior officials from PPMC and CPPA-G, as they were attending a meeting with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The Power Division was of the view that the proposed package will be subsidy-neutral, and will offer the targeted electricity consumers an incentivised rate of 8-9 cents per unit for extra electricity, ProPakistani reported.

Greenfield industries, such as crypto mining and data centres, are expected to be the primary beneficiaries of these lower rates regarding their total power consumption, as long as they comply with specific terms and conditions that are still to be finalised.

The package is said to be designed with the next three years in sight, propelling the growth of the sectors concerned while effectively managing power resources.
