The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has officially announced plans to introduce a new series of currency notes in the second half of 2025, a move which seems to have set the record straight regarding the introduction of new currency notes of the Pakistani rupee.
The redesigned currency notes' confirmation, as well as clarification, from the central bank comes amid misinformation spreading on social media, causing confusion regarding the designs and timelines for these notes.
However, we've brought the flip and clear side of the coin: the clarification provided by the SBP.
In January 2024, the SBP initiated designing new currency notes for all existing denominations, for which an art competition was also hosted, attended by well-known Pakistani artists and the public to contribute ideas and themes for the new notes.
These designs are expected to guide professional designers in creating the final versions.
SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad confirmed in January 2025 that the new notes will start gradually rolling out in the second half of 2025, following cabinet approval and the finalisation of technical and security features.
Contrary to some claims making waves among netizens, it emerged that the launch of new banknotes in Pakistan will not happen all at once.
Similarly, it's noteworthy that the SBP has not confirmed to design polymer notes, and the designs circulating online are merely early concepts, not official. This detail discards the claims being disseminated online that new notes will launch by July 2025, and old notes will expire immediately.
The new series of Pakistani banknotes is anticipated to include the denominations of Rs10, 20, 50, 100, 500, 1,000, and 5,000 banknotes, packed with enhanced security measures like holograms and UV patterns. It should be noted that old notes will remain valid during the transition.
Citizens are advised to rely solely on the SBP’s official website or verified accounts for accurate information, and avoid scams promising pre-orders of the redesigned Pakistani banknotes depicted in viral, confirmed images.
