Pakistan Railways (PR) plans to produce 295 high-capacity wagons domestically by March 2026, with assistance from Chinese specialists. To achieve this, production targets have been assigned to the railway’s factories in Risalpur and the Lahore Mughalpura workshops.
By June 2027, more than 170 high-speed passenger coaches, including brake vans, will also be manufactured in Pakistan, according to Ghulam Qasim, General Manager (Manufacturing & Services) at PR.
The manufacture of modern high-capacity goods wagons and high-speed passenger coaches is a key step in improving PR’s freight and passenger services.
Around four years ago, PR placed orders for 820 wagons and 230 coaches in collaboration with China.
To date, 200 wagons and 46 passenger coaches have been fully built in China and delivered to Pakistan. Meanwhile, PR has manufactured 325 wagons locally, including 200 semi-knocked-down (SKD) units and 95 completely knocked-down (CKD) units.
The wagons produced in Pakistan include flat container wagons, high-sided open-top wagons, covered wagons and brake vans.
To support the construction of the remaining units, Chinese engineers have joined Pakistani teams across PR’s carriage factories and workshops.
The phased manufacturing of the remaining 295 wagons is scheduled to begin on November 25, 2025, and conclude on March 30, 2026.
This programme is part of Pakistan Railways’ broader strategy to modernise the country’s transport infrastructure by upgrading freight capacity and improving passenger services through new rolling stock.
