Pakistan Railways is planning to privatise the commercial management of 11 additional trains to the private sector in a bid to enhance travel facilities and revenue generation.
According to railway officials, the move aims to bring better service standards through private sector participation.
It is worth noting that the trains scheduled for privatisation include Hazara Express, Bahauddin Zakaria Express, Millat Express, Subak Kharam Express, Rawal Express, Badar Express, Ghori Express, Ravi Express, Thall Express, Faiz Ahmed Faiz Express, and Moenjo-Daro Passenger.
Pakistan Railways has invited interested companies to submit bids by August 12, with the bid opening scheduled for the same day, sources added.
It is worth noting that railway authorities noted that the trains are not being fully privatised but rather outsourced for commercial operations, while the rail infrastructure and regulatory control will remain under the government’s purview.
The move is part of broader efforts by Pakistan Railways to revolutionise operations, reduce financial losses, and offer better travel experiences to passengers.
This privatisation initiative comes as part of a larger reform plan, which also includes launching new freight trains, such as the upcoming Pakistan-Russia cargo train project.
Authorities expect that bringing the private sector will help revive Pakistan Railways, which has long suffered from financial losses, operational delays, and outdated infrastructure.
