In 2024, Google is set to revamp its approach to smartphone design with the introduction of three distinct versions of its forthcoming Pixel 9 series, as per information from 91mobiles. The website now indicates that earlier renderings, credited to OnLeaks, showcased the Pixel 9 Pro and a larger version, the Pixel 9 Pro “XL” — not the standard Pixel 9. The latter's design has been unveiled today through new images.

The XL name, previously used for larger Pixel models until 2019, is making a comeback. Google had simplified its range with the single-sized Pixel 5 and later adopted the “Pro” label in 2021. It appears Google is now adopting an approach similar to Apple's, offering the Pro model in two sizes and bringing back the XL designation.

The Pixel 9 maintains the aesthetic revealed in previous leaks, featuring flat edges in contrast to the curved design of the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro. It also continues the trend of increasingly rounded display corners.

Pixel 9 sizes

The speculated screen sizes for the three models are as follows:

  • Pixel 9 Pro XL: 6.5 inches
  • Pixel 9 Pro: 6.1 inches
  • Pixel 9: 6.03 inches

Interestingly, this represents a slight decrease in size for the XL model compared to the 6.7-inch screen of the current Pixel 8 Pro. This change might be Google's attempt to find a better size balance, as some users find the 8 Pro overly large. Both Pro models are expected to feature a triple-camera setup on the back, potentially offering Google's top-tier photography capabilities in a more manageable size.

However, Google's immediate focus is on other devices, with the Pixel 8A and Pixel Fold 2 likely to debut at the company's I/O keynote in May. Looking further ahead to the next year, the possibility of a Pixel 9A arises, potentially resulting in four different models in that generation.
