While it may be years before the PlayStation 6 (PS6) arrives, new leaks suggest that development of its next-generation console is already underway. The PS5 Pro is set for a 2026 release, so it is likely the PS6 will arrive in 2027-2028.
Earlier this year, Sony Senior Vice President Naomi Matsuoka hinted that the PS5 has entered the "latter stage of its life cycle", making some think development of the PS6 has begun.
Additional rumours to consider are the AMD hardware allegedly being built for the next-gen console. The leaks suggest that the PS6 will have a custom AMD Magnus APU to power it. Who knows how many performance upgrades will come compared to the PS5.
Accordingly, Tom's Guide specs for the PS6 may include GPU upgrades that utilise advanced GPU technology and faster upscaling features to 8K. PlayStation systems architect Mark Cerny confirmed a long-term deal with AMD and said his "time frame is multi-year," which matches the estimate of a 2028 launch.
As another source of speculation, a cancelled Blade Runner game was supposedly aimed at "Gen 10" platforms in 2027, hinting at an earlier release, but that is not confirmed yet. Former PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida said that "2028 feels right" for the PS6 launch.
While Sony has yet to confirm any PS6 details, expectations are high. Gamers hope for backward compatibility with PS5 titles, faster load times, and improved graphics powered by cutting-edge AMD tech.
