The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked more than 1.3 million unlawful online links to save users from illegal and harmful content. The links were discovered on websites, social media, and other mobile applications.
This move was done under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016, an act created to prevent cybercrimes and provide a secure environment on the internet in Pakistan.
PTA's steps to make internet safer in Pakistan
The PTA has been constantly working towards eliminating online content that may lead to hate, violence, or unlawful activities.
The PTA employs two methods of blocking content. They directly block the website if it is not secure (HTTP).
However, if the website is secure (HTTPS), they request the platform's admin, such as Facebook or YouTube, to delete the content.
For the facilitation of ease in reporting illicit content, a complaint system has been established by PTA. Anyone can file a complaint via their web portal, mobile app, specific email addresses, or by calling the toll-free helpline.
They are accessible to everyone, and some of these are reserved for reporting grave crimes such as blasphemy or abuse of children.
In addition to that, 49 government institutions, such as law enforcement and regulatory institutions, now have a secure portal where they can report illegal content based on their institutions.
The PTA is not only blocking bad content. It also aims to educate the public on safe use of the internet. That is why it is collaborating with UNICEF, Meta (Facebook), TikTok, and Telenor to raise awareness regarding online safety.
