The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has completed its investigation into the recent data leak that sparked public concern.
As per the results, the PTA has verified that no customer information from telecom companies was stolen, and the data that was leaked did not come from telecom providers.
Data circulating online is old and seems to have been compiled from various sources before being posted to the dark web, according to the investigation.
Importantly, the PTA stressed that private data, including Call Data Records (CDRs), travel records, family trees, and vehicle registration information, is not kept by telecom operators and is not connected to the leak.
The telecom regulator's conclusions imply that rather than a breach of telecom companies' databases, the data leak most likely occurred as a result of information being gathered from multiple other sources.
Telecom customers are reassured that their data is secure with their providers following the PTA's investigation, which clarifies the situation.
The authority's investigation emphasises how crucial it is to have strong data protection policies in place across a range of industries and how careful one must be in protecting sensitive data.
A reminder of the intricacies of data security in the digital age and the necessity of stakeholder collaboration to avert such incidents can be found in the PTA's findings.
