The Punjab government has launched an AI-based Central Media Monitoring Unit. This smart mix, of Rs250 million (25 crore), will track, interpret, and analyse media content on digital platforms in real time.

The unit will be established below the Digital Media Wing. Notably, the main task for the new unit will be conducting real-time observation of online news, social media trends, and digital narratives in order for the government to be aware of and respond to changing dynamics.

With this decision, Punjab is one of the first provinces to implement artificial intelligence technology to conduct media monitoring at the government level.

Officials say the AI system will be able to assist officials with countering misinformation, analysing public sentiment, and enhancing the government's digital communication framework.

The project is an indication of how technology and government are intersecting for smarter decision-making.

As well as this project, the budget also includes a proposal of Rs100 million for a Technology Advancement Program, indicating Punjab's desire to modernise its digital stack in technology.

While the AI media monitor is the highlight, the provincial budget also includes several cultural and infrastructure plans:

  • Rs700 million to upgrade the Alhamra Arts Council
  • Rs200 million to solarize the Punjab Council of Arts
  • A massive Rs1.5 billion has been allocated for a new DGPR Complex to strengthen public information systems.

The plan also includes regional arts development in Bhakkar, Bahawalpur, Multan, Okara, and other cities.
