In a major push to promote sustainable transportation, the Punjab government has announced special green-coloured number plates exclusively for electric vehicles (EVs).
With this initiative, the government aims at promoting eco-conscious mobility and making electric vehicles (EVs) easily recognisable on the roads.
According to Additional Director General Ahmad Saeed, the newly announced green-coloured EV plates will now be mandatory for all-electric vehicle owners.
These plates will replace the traditional ones, offering a clear visual distinction between EVs and fuel-powered vehicles.
He revealed that so far, over 16,000 electric vehicles have been registered across Punjab. These include approximately 14,500 electric motorcycles, 1,461 electric cars, 36 electric rickshaws, and 31 electric buses.
Saeed also noted that the government has already been offering major financial relief to EV owners. A 95% discount on registration and token tax is currently being provided.
He confirmed that this tax relief will continue into the next financial year to further incentivise the use of electric vehicles.
This move to introduce electric vehicle number plates in Punjab not only facilitate in identifying eco-friendly vehicles but also aligns with broader efforts to cut carbon emissions and modernise urban transport systems.
