In a historic move, the Punjab government unveiled Pakistan's first driving test vehicle powered by artificial intelligence (AI), which was created under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif's special direction.
The Traffic Police designed and constructed the smart car with the goal of completely automating, removing human intervention, and increasing transparency in the driving test procedure.
Notably, the car's sophisticated cameras and sensors allow it to evaluate applicants' performance automatically.
In addition to four external cameras that record driving behaviour during the test, the vehicle has an internal facial recognition camera and a biometric fingerprint scanner.
The AI-powered system, which provides test instructions, a countdown timer, and checks for safety features like the seatbelt and handbrake, turns on automatically once a candidate is seated.
Test results are updated in real time without the need for human input, and the system can immediately identify a failure, such as excessive use of reverse gear.
In the current fiscal year, 200 of the AI-powered driving test cars are expected to be manufactured and distributed throughout Punjab's licensing centres, with the first deployment taking place in Lahore.
DIG Traffic Waqas Nazir emphasised how the technology can guarantee an impartial and open testing procedure, removing human prejudice and increasing productivity.
This creative project is in line with the government's goal of using technology to enhance governance and represents a major step towards modernising Punjab's licensing system.
