Shell Pakistan Limited (SHEL) has officially changed its name to Wafi Energy Pakistan Limited, highlighting a key transition in its history.
Effective January 13, the name change signifies the company’s transition following its acquisition by Wafi Energy Holding Limited, a UAE-based entity backed by Saudi Group Asyad Holding.
Why did Shell Pakistan change its name?
This development was confirmed after the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) issued a Certificate of Incorporation on Change of Name.
In the notice to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), the company stated: “The SECP has issued a Certificate of Incorporation on Change of Name dated January 13, 2025. Consequently, the company’s name has changed from Shell Pakistan Limited to Wafi Energy Pakistan Limited.”
The name change follows a series of acquisitions in which Wafi Energy Holding Limited acquired 87.78% of Shell Pakistan Limited's shares, securing majority control.
Who owns Wafi Energy Pakistan Limited now?
In July 2024, Saudi Group Asyad Holding, through Wafi Energy Holding, acquired 165.7 million shares of Shell Pakistan Limited. With this move, Shell Petroleum Company Limited exited the Pakistani market, completing its divestment process that started in mid-2023.
The company assured stakeholders that the rebranding would not affect its operations. Wafi Energy Pakistan Limited plans to maintain its energy services while aligning with its parent company's vision for growth in Pakistan.
