Sindh government has announced to assume full control of the Green Line and Orange Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) systems from the federal government on March 10, 2025. This decision was finalised during the 14th meeting of the Sindh Mass Transit Authority (SMTA) board.

This decision marks a significant shift in the province’s public transport management. Under this transition, the Sindh administration will supervise the 100-bus fleet, ensuring operational efficiency and service improvement.

The meeting was attended by Sukkur Mayor Arsalan Islam Sheikh, Hyderabad Mayor Kashif Shoro, Transport Secretary Asad Zamin, Managing Director of SMTA Kamal Dayo, Member of Planning and Development Sikandar Sheikh, DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah, consultants, and other key stakeholders.

The existing staff will be retained for three months, allowing for a smooth transition while legal processes for BRT agreements are finalised.

Minister for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon, who chaired the meeting, reaffirmed the provincial government’s dedication to improving urban mobility.

He highlighted that taking direct control of the BRT systems would lead to better service management, maintenance, and future expansion plans.

The transfer of BRT ownership to the Sindh government is seen as a significant step towards improving Karachi’s public transportation system, letting the provincial authorities implement localised policies, and ensuring that the service caters to the city’s growing transit requirement.

With better resource allocation, maintenance, and policy-making, this transition is claimed to enhance public transport efficiency, making daily commutes simple for thousands of passengers.
