Sora, OpenAI’s viral AI video generator, is now officially available for Android users in the US, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The AI-powered Sora app, which allows users to generate realistic videos of themselves performing various actions, first launched on iOS in September.

Sora’s Android version

The Android version has the same features as the iOS version, including the high-profile 'Cameos' tool, which allows users to generate realistic videos in their likeness or involve their likeness in 'videos'.

Clips can be added to Sora’s social feed — similar like TikTok — where users can browse and interact with AI-generated 'videos' from others.

OpenAI’s latest update has now positioned Sora to be a direct competitor for Meta’s 'Vibes' AI video feed and social video platforms, such as Instagram and TikTok.

Following a report on the application of deepfake technology to produce fake videos of public figures in history, such as Martin Luther King Jr, Sora limited certain ways of producing video and made updates to its restrictions for the generation of content.

The company also updated its copyright policy, which changed from an 'opt-out' to an 'opt-in' copyright policy for users, after criticism of its earlier use of copyrighted characters (including SpongeBob and Pikachu).

Additionally, OpenAI has faced a trademark claim against a celebrity video platform, Cameo, for the use of the same name for Sora’s video feature.

Looking ahead, OpenAI plans to expand Sora’s functionality with character cameos, basic editing tools, and customised social feeds, enabling users to tailor what they see and create, a sign that the AI firm aims to make Sora the next big thing in AI-driven creativity.
