YouTube is intensifying efforts to tackle misinformation before the United States 2024 election by implementing stringent measures against AI-generated videos. The platform recently announced an update, mandating all creators — regardless of their stance or perspective — to disclose if their videos have been altered using AI. These disclosure labels will be prominently displayed in both the video content and descriptions, a move set to roll out in the forthcoming months.

Expanding its vigilance beyond political content, YouTube confirmed that AI-altered labels would extend to various categories, encompassing music and other genres beyond election-related videos.

Moreover, YouTube is set to enforce transparency from political advertisers by requiring them to disclose if their ads incorporate digitally manipulated or generated content.

In a parallel initiative, Microsoft also introduced comprehensive measures to safeguard the integrity of the 2024 election. Their approach involves the implementation of "invisible" digital watermarking, known as C2PA, designed to authenticate AI-generated content.

The Campaign Success Team aims to bolster legal actions by banning AI-generated fake videos of federal candidates in political advertisements. However, exceptions will be made for parodies, satirical content, and legitimate news usage.

Explaining the significance of this watermarking technology, Microsoft emphasised its capability to verify the origin of images or videos while preventing tampering, thereby establishing the authenticity of content.

The upcoming 2024 US presidential election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024. These measures underscore a proactive stance by tech giants to combat misinformation and ensure the integrity of digital content, particularly in the realm of political discourse.
