WhatsApp is introducing a new feature called Private Processing that will allow users to chat with Meta AI in a more secure manner.

The feature will ensure that AI chats remain private and user data is safeguarded. It's an optional feature that will be available in the coming weeks.

WhatsApp's AI chat feature

Meta claims this feature is meant to make AI conversations more secure. Private Processing will enable users to request the AI to perform tasks such as summarizing conversations or answering questions, without storing their messages.

When the session is closed, even Meta won't be able to see what was discussed. This is welcome news for users who wish to enjoy intelligent features without compromising their privacy.

The firm is leveraging cloud-based AI technology to support this feature, which operates in the manner of Apple's Private Cloud Compute.

According to Meta, it will utilise a network known as OHTTP that conceals users' IP addresses so that no one can trace the chat back to them.

But unlike Apple, which utilises on-device AI as default, WhatsApp's AI will be running on Meta's servers. Therefore, users will have to enable Private Processing manually if they desire additional privacy.

To establish trust, Meta has included Private Processing in its bug bounty programme. This implies that security researchers can test it and flag any vulnerabilities.

The company also commits to publishing a complete technical report before rolling it out.
