After months of patience, netizens across Pakistan are on the verge of a treat as Pakistan is preparing to launch 5G services in the coming months, with seven major cities being the first to embrace the upgraded broadband tech.

As announced by State Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Fatima Khawaja at the ITCN Asia Expo in Karachi, the 5G launch in Pakistan will provide faster and more reliable internet connections all over Pakistan, in line with the country’s “Digital Pakistan” vision.

The certainty regarding 5G rollout in Pakistan comes months after the country struggled with back-to-back delays and intermittent internet breakdowns nationwide, disrupting citizens' and businesses' essential routine work.

Major obstacles causing the ongoing delays in Pakistan's 5G launch include limited spectrum allocation, high costs, a weak fibre-optic network, and frequent internet disruptions.

Industry experts and regulatory bodies have pointed out that while mobile and broadband usage have increased, the country continues to face the absence of infrastructure and policies as serious bottlenecks.

The minister mentioned a partnership with Saudi Arabia to enhance Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and accelerate economic growth.

The government of Pakistan is also planning to conduct a long-awaited 5G spectrum auction by the end of the year, dependent on the resolution of certain legal and technical issues.

The much-wanted launch of 5G in Pakistan is expected to create new opportunities for connectivity, smart services, and digital transformation, enabling Pakistan to remain relevant with global technological advancements.
